Meet Dr Andrew Markey, BEAUTY PIE’s new Consultant Dermatologist In Residence
It’s one thing to be a world-renowned dermatologist who’s passionate about healthy skin. But it’s quite another to be a world-renowned dermatologist who’s also passionate about products, skincare and the joy of combining performance ingredients with gorgeous textures and scents.
That’s where Dr Andrew Markey comes in. A Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatological and Laser Surgeon, his London clinic has a steady stream of A-listers through its doors (he’s not naming names but he did reveal that clients were offering to send their private jets for him when lockdown prevented them from traveling - he politely declined).
Having worked and studied in the US at the start of his career, he returned to the UK and became one of the pioneers of the new world of lasers and injectables - and remains one of the most sought-after derms on both sides of the Atlantic.
Where Science Meets Beauty
But one thing Dr Markey also loves is what he calls “a good face cream.” (He has already created a whole range of them for Beauty Pie). He combines his surgical expertise with a life-long fascination with cosmetic science - and how skincare and makeup products are formulated. That’s what brings him to BEAUTY PIE. “I firmly believe that the key to healthy skin is in products people actually enjoy using,” he says. “It’s the combination of clinically-proven ingredients with the ‘secret sauce’ of texture, scent and experience.”

“I often head to cosmetics rather than prescription creams - because they are generally so much nicer to use.“
For that reason, says Dr Markey, when recommending products to patients, “I often head to cosmetics rather than prescription creams - because they are generally so much nicer to use.”
But of course, the products he recommends have to make the grade medically, too. Dr Markey looks for what he calls his ‘Master Molecules’ which are Vitamin A (also known as Retinol or Retinoids), Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) and Vitamin C.
Dermatologist-Approved Formulations
One thing he’s keen to point out is that while the beauty world has become fixated on specific active ingredients, as a dermatologist he believes that it’s not just about the percentages of active ingredients you use, but how well-balanced those actives are within each product. “There’s a trend at the moment to be too aggressive with active ingredients,” he says. “But overdoing the actives can lead to what I call ‘inflammaging’; skin irritation that can lead skin to show premature signs of ageing.”
Instead, he says, you can get very good results “by being moderate with the amount of Master Molecules you use and balancing them with calming, soothing agents in a beautiful formulation.”
“I’m very excited to be sharing my passion for education in healthy skin habits with the BEAUTY PIE team.“
