Everyone’s Talking About ‘Triple Cleansing’ for a Total Skin Detox

You may have heard of ‘double cleansing’ (the skincare practice of using a duo of cleansers in your routine in order to remove all traces of makeup and thoroughly clean skin) but if your skin is calling out for a total overhaul and a deep detox, you might want to consider a triple cleanse.

Our founder, Marcia Kilgore (who began her career as a facialist to the stars including Madonna, Oprah and Christy Turlington - so it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about skincare) swears by the triple cleanse for the times when skin has become chronically congested, dull and lacklustre.

The key is to pick complementary cleansers rather than competing ones. You want each of your three choices to cater to a different skin need to obtain maximum benefits and avoid any chance of overloading your skin.

Here’s everything you need to know in order to adopt the triple cleanse into your skincare routine, as well as the best products for the job…

What is triple cleansing?

Triple cleansing, as its name suggests, involves three distinct steps to the cleansing process:

  1. Remove makeup: The first step is a gentle, wash-off cleanser that totally dissolves every last trace of residual makeup and SPF. Japanfusion™ Pure Transforming Cleanser is the perfect choice. It’s a beautiful antioxidant-infused, high-tech, gel-to-oil-to-milk formula that removes all traces of makeup easily (including waterproof mascara), leaving the skin instantly clean, fresh and radiant.

  2. Pore care: The second step is focused on deep cleaning your pores. You’ll want a formula that is able to draw impurities to the skin surface, like Dr Glycolic™ Deep Purifying Foamy Clay Cleanser, which has Kaolin and Montmorillonite Clays to unclog pores of dirt, oil and bacteria build up to help prevent acne and blackheads.

  3. Exfoliate: The final step is all about restoring skin’s natural radiance by gently (but thoroughly) removing all dulling, dead skin cells that are sitting on the skin surface. Wonderscrub™ Bio-Dermabrasion Face Polish has the perfect ratio of super gentle Volcanic Scrub Spheres, hydrating liquid Shea Butter and super-fruit nutrient Pineapple Enzymes to slough away dead skin and visibly renew skin’s luminosity. Gently buff a pea-sized amount onto dry skin into skin using fingertips to create a circular motion, paying particular attention to congested areas. For a more intense exfoliating treatment, leave on for three minutes before rinsing off.

Is triple cleansing suitable for every skin type?

It’s important to note that the triple cleanse should be considered an occasional treatment for particularly congested skin, rather than part of your daily routine. If you perform a triple cleanse too often, you could risk stripping skin and irritating it, causing unnecessary redness or dryness.

If you have redness-prone or sensitive skin, the triple cleanse isn’t for you. However, there are other ways to restore skin’s radiance and deep clean pores, like incorporating an encapsulated Retinol into your routine - read up on everything you need to know about Retinol here
