Rosemary Ferguson

Expert nutritionist Rosemary Ferguson on why she’s all about the supplements in powder form.

Anyone who has followed me on Instagram for years knows that my first love in the world of supplements was a ‘green powder’. In the ten-plus years since I’ve had my clinic, I consistently say to clients ‘up your greens’ or ‘increase your cruciferous vegetables’. (Part of the brassica genus of plants, e.g. cauliflower, cabbage, kale, broccoli, bak choy). Green powders are an easy, absorbable and accessible way to do this.

I consistently say to clients ‘up your greens’ or ‘increase your cruciferous vegetables’.

Another reason I love green powder is the way that it can support the liver. I'm passionate about aiding liver function: the liver has to deal with so much for us, day-in, day-out - from the effects of everything from hormones to stress, alcohol, medication, to poor diet, to environmental pollution. It's never a bad idea to take it.

Beauty Pie has formulated a high grade superfood powder containing some lovely grasses including, spirulina, chlorella, alfalfa, spinach, broccoli, kale, matcha and maca. It really packs a punch and is supportive of the liver, energy, gut, digestion, skin, immune health and both female and male hormones.

You can easily incorporate this into your daily smoothie or juice, you could also make an elixir in the morning with filtered water, the juice of half a lemon and 1 tsp of green powder. Alternatively, you could also add 1 tsp to your bottle water and drink throughout the day.

I wanted to look at three of the greens in Green Me Up that I think are particularly great in more detail - so here we go:

Barley Grass

Supportive of digestive health due to its sodium content - which is crucial in order for the lining of the stomach to produce hydrochloric acid. It also contains digestive enzymes that aid the digestion and absorption of our food. It’s rich in chlorophyll, which helps to release a flow of oxygen into the bloodstream, detoxing the body of harmful toxins and impurities by binding to them.

Barley grass is known for its properties to chelate chemicals and heavy metals. It also offers protection from cellular damage, by regenerating damaged cells and tissues.

Alfalfa

One of its main benefits is that it can help to alkalise and detoxify the liver. In fact, Alfalfa is extremely supportive of the liver as it helps to replenish liver-supportive vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin K.

Alfalfa contributes to digestive health due to its high content of pre-biotic ‘fructo-oligosaccharides’ – compounds which fertilise and feed the good bacteria in the gut. It also contains a range of digestive enzymes including amylase which breaks down carbohydrates, starch and sugar, lipase for fat and protease which helps breaks down protein molecules.

Chlorella

This has both an impressive macro and micro nutrient profile, containing an abundance of essential vitamins and minerals. It contains around 50% complete protein with around 70% net protein utilisation/digestibility. It's the heavyweight champion of detoxification, especially of heavy metals. It wraps itself around stubborn toxins and helps to eliminate them from the body. There is also scientific evidence around it boosting the immune system, enhancing antioxidant status, regulating glucose uptake into cells, reducing blood pressure, improving insulin resistance and much more.

Collagen Powder

I LOVE Collagen, as does everyone at the moment. I think it's a brilliant supplement to take consistently. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and needed to make connective tissue. It's a major component of bone, skin, muscles, tendons and cartilage. It's targeted to audiences as the fountain of youth but collagen will go where it is needed in the body, which might not be your face, this is why consistency is key. Marine collagen is made by extracting collagen from the bones, skin or scales of fish. It is composed of type 1 collagen which is the primary collagen found in the body. This makes it highly bioavailable, absorbable and easier to digest. This collagen powder is also formulated with Tremella Fuciformis, Biotin and Vitamin C, which helps support collagen formation as these nutrients work in synergy.
