The Reasons Why Your Skin Is Dry

Dry Skin

We all want healthy-looking, glowing skin but as we age, our skin can develop fine lines and wrinkles, along with hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity. While ageing is a natural process, there are certain things we can do to avoid premature ageing, including steering clear of damaging lifestyle factors (such as stress, smoking, lack of sleep and exposure to sunlight) and adopting a consistent, science-backed skincare routine.

Here are the best steps you can take to future-proof your skin and promote a youthful-looking glow.

Step 1 – Gentle Cleansing

One of the most important steps in caring for dry skin is choosing the right cleanser. Harsh soaps can strip away natural oils, leaving your skin feeling tight and irritated. Opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers that are rich in protective antioxidants and are free from drying ingredients like sulphates, alcohol and fragrance.

Prolonged exposure to hot water can make dry skin worse. Aim for short, lukewarm showers or baths and, when finished, use a soft towel to pat your skin dry instead of rubbing vigorously.

Step 2 - Serums

Serums are lightweight, targeted skincare products that deliver concentrated doses of active ingredients. For dry skin, look for serums containing deeply restorative, soothing and hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Niacinamide and Vitamin E.

Serums are best applied after cleansing and before your moisturiser. You can layer different serums to target multiple concerns, like dryness and fine lines.

Step 3 - Moisturise

Moisturising from top to toe is essential for dry skin. For the skin on your body, moisturise straight after washing to lock in hydration while your skin is still damp, and pay particular attention to extra dry areas like elbows, knees and heels.

When it comes to your face, moisturise after you apply your serum to lock in all those targeted ingredients and to provide a cocooning layer of hydration. Look for a nourishing formula that contains humectants (like Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin) to draw in moisture, and emollients (like Shea Butter and Coconut Oil) to seal it in. Treat your skin to a hydrating mask once or twice a week for an extra moisture boost.

Step 4 - Day To Day

In addition to your skincare routine, including skin-healthy habits into your daily life can also help keep your skin moisturised, soft and supple.

  • Protect your skin from harsh weather conditions by wearing protective clothing and using SPF lotions and moisturisers.

  • Gently exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and improve the absorption of your products.

  • Keep your lips hydrated with a lip balm and your hands with a moisturising hand cream.

  • Boost your skin’s hydration by drinking plenty of water and using a humidifier in your home.
