10 Ways To Support Skin In The Menopause

Menopause is the time when your periods stop as a result of lower levels of hormones, including estrogen. This can have a knock-on effect on your complexion, with the functions of your skin changing in a number of different ways. Menopausal skin changes can include dryness, thinning, loss of elasticity, increased sensitivity, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To address these changes, there are several adjustments you can make to your skincare routine and reduce the impact.

1. Hydrate and moisturise

Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils. Follow with a moisturizer that is rich in hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid or Ceramides. Consider using a heavier moisturiser at night to provide extra hydration while you sleep.

2. SPF

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is crucial in preventing further skin damage and reducing the risk of hyperpigmentation and wrinkles.

3. Incorporate antioxidants

Antioxidants like Vitamin C and E can help protect the skin from free radicals and promote collagen production. Look for serums or moisturisers containing these ingredients to help combat signs of aging.

4. Retinol

Consider incorporating Retinol or Retinoid products into your routine to address fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Start with a low concentration and gradually increase usage to minimise potential irritation.

5. Gentle exfoliation

Exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. Opt for gentle exfoliants like chemical exfoliants (AHAs or BHAs) or enzyme-based exfoliators to avoid over-exfoliating or irritating the skin.

6. Soothe and calm

Look for skincare products with soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera, Chamomile, or Niacinamide to help calm any skin sensitivity or redness.

7. Eye cream

Use an eye cream specifically formulated to address concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles around the eyes.

8. Consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

If appropriate for your situation, consult with a healthcare professional about hormone replacement therapy. HRT can help address some of the skin changes associated with menopause.

9. Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy lifestyle

Drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. These lifestyle factors can contribute to overall skin health.

10. Up your Collagen levels

Either with supplements, or skincare creams - or both. Skin’s Collagen supplies are on a steady decline from your twenties, but they really start to decline faster when you reach the menopause.

Remember, everyone's skin is unique, so it's important to listen to your skin's needs and adjust your routine accordingly. Consulting with a dermatologist or skincare professional can provide personalised advice and recommendations based on your specific skin concerns during menopause.
